DGT V16

Starting January 1, 2026, it will be mandatory for vehicles to carry a connected V16 signal, according to the Spanish Government Delegation in Ceuta in a press release issued by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). Until that date, traditional warning triangles will remain in use alongside non-connected V16 signals, as well as connected V16 signals once they become available on the market.

DGT V16 Emergency Beacon Regulation

What is the DGT V16 Regulation?

Starting January 1, 2026, Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) requires all vehicles to carry a connected V-16 emergency beacon.
This new law replaces the traditional warning triangle, aiming to improve roadside safety and reduce accidents when drivers exit vehicles.

Why is this Law Being Enforced?

Warning triangles force drivers to walk along high-speed roads, which has led to fatal accidents.
Between 2019–2022, Spain recorded multiple roadside pedestrian fatalities linked to triangle placement.
The V-16 beacon can be placed directly on the roof from inside the vehicle, eliminating this risk.

Is Your V16 Legal and Connected?

To be valid in 2026, a V-16 beacon must:
Be approved and homologated by DGT (visible certification code such as LCOE / IDIADA).
Include embedded connectivity (NB-IoT or LTE-M) that transmits real-time location to the DGT 3.0 platform.
Guarantee at least 12 years of connectivity service at no additional cost.
Meet full technical requirements under Royal Decree 159/2021 and Royal Decree 1030/2022.

How Does DGT Connectivity Work?

When activated, the beacon transmits geolocation data to Spain’s National Access Point (DGT 3.0).
This information is shared with:
Other drivers via navigation systems and apps.
Emergency services and traffic management centers.
Connected vehicle platforms, providing real-time alerts.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Using a non-connected beacon after Jan 2026 will result in fines of €80–€200.
French authorities have already warned citizens traveling to Spain about the risk of fines if they do not carry a compliant beacon.

Tips for Compliance – Even as a Visitor

Spanish drivers must upgrade to a connected V16 before 2026.
Foreign vehicles traveling in Spain are also required to comply.
